Kaori ODA
Born in Osaka in 1987. Filmmaker and artist.
Explores audiovisual and cinematic expression that approaches collective memory by tracing the invisible histories inscribed in landscapes and human lives.
Participated in film.factory, founded by Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr. Feature debut ARAGANE (2015) received a Special Mention at the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival. Subsequent works Cenote (2020) and GAMA (2023) have been highly acclaimed internationally.
Recipient of the inaugural Nagasaki Oshima Award (2020) and the Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts (Film Division, 2021).
Latest film, Underground (2024), selected for the Forum section of the Berlin International Film Festival.
Alongside filmmaking, produces and exhibits paintings and moving-image installations. Recent projects include the solo exhibition “Oda Kaori: Reflecting Light—Film and Painting” at Higashine Manabia Terrace (2020); participation in “Impact of Mexico” at Ichihara Lakeside Museum (2021); and the collaborative art project “Museum Composting Project” with Aomori Museum of Art (2021–2023).
